Amy Winehouse‘s mother Janis is making a documentary to commemorate her daughter’s memory ten years after the singer’s death.
The BBC film, tentatively titled Amy Winehouse: 10 Years On, will reveal insights into Amy’s life, career and legacy through the eyes of her mum, Janis, whose version of events “often differs from the narrative we have been told before”.
The BBC said that a huge part of Janis’ motivation to be involved was because Multiple Sclerosis “threatens to strip her of her memories of Amy”.
Janis was diagnosed with MS in 2003, which can cause memory loss and confusion.
“I don’t feel the world knew the true Amy, the one I brought up,” Janis said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to offer an understanding of her roots and a deeper insight into the real Amy.”
Janis will be joined by family and friends for the film, offering “a new female-driven interpretation of her life, her loves and her legacy”.
The singer’s life was brought to the big screen in Asif Kapadia’s 2015 documentary Amy, which won an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27
Amy’s childhood friend Juliette Ashby recently supported the documentary, telling BBC Breakfast: “I think it’s a lovely, wonderful thing her mum’s doing for her. Genuinely there is no one like her. And there won’t ever be anyone like her.”
