Some of the most recognisable hair in pop music is gone, after Jedward shaved their quiffs in aid of a cancer charity.

John and Edward Grimes each allowed their heads to be shaved on RTE’s The Late Late Show on Friday night in honour of their mother, Susanna, who passed away due to cancer in 2019.

The 29-year-old twins have retained their vertiginous hairstyles since they first rose to fame as contestants on The X Factor in 2009 — finishing in sixth place.

But now their manes have been shorn in aid of the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day fundraiser.

As his brother stepped up to begin shaving him, Edward said: “We’ve had this hair for over 10 years. It’s part of our identity.

“I don’t think we’d be here today if we didn’t have the hair, but this is the first time we’re going to have our hair like this since the beginning of Jedward.”

Announcing the stunt earlier this week, Edward said: “We hope all the funds raised will contribute to a cancer-free future, this is such a good cause.

“We’re sending so much strength and love to all those suffering with cancer.”

The duo tweeted on Friday night, stating that the Irish public had raised €2.5m for the Irish Cancer Society thanks to the fundraising efforts of themselves and other celebs, including Westlife’s Shane Filan.

After rising to prominence via their appearance on X Factor, Jedward went on to release several albums together and represented Ireland twice at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The duo placed eighth in 2011 with the song Lipstick and 19th in 2012 with the song Waterline — notably finishing ahead of the UK entry on both occasions.

They also appeared as themselves in Keith Lemon: The Film and made cameos in three of the Sharknado movies.
