Racist attacks on police officers almost trebled during last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, it has emerged.
Figures seen by The Telegraph reveal there were more than 430 incidents recorded against Black and minority ethnic (BAME) officers between June and September last year, up from 150 in the previous four months.
The racially aggravated attacks, which included everything from grievous bodily harm (GBH) to harassment, took place in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by police officers in the United States in May.
The death of Mr Floyd sparked global condemnation and saw widespread protests by the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in London.
But data from Scotland Yard suggests black officers who were helping to police the demonstrations were themselves the targets of racist abuse and violence.
A total of 27 officers were injured when a BLM protest turned violent in June, but there were many more BAME officers who suffered abuse and assaults at the hands of those on BLM marches.
Far right protesters who held violent counter demonstrations in the capital last summer, are also believed to have been partly responsible for the increase in racially aggravated attacks on officers.
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has condemned the actions of those BLM protestors who turned on BAME officers.
He told the London Assembly: “I was really distressed when I spoke to black officers during the first Black Lives Matter protests. I was told that black officers were being verbally abused and attacked by those on the Black Lives Matter protests.
“We are doing all this work to recruit black officers but yet members of the community are giving them a hard time for joining the police service, and it’s very difficult.”
But Susan Hall, who is the leader of the Conservatives on the London Assembly, said the Mayor had failed in his duty to protect ethnic minority officers.
She said: “I am disgusted but not surprised that racist assaults against police officers spiked during the Black Lives Matter protests. Many officers reported that a few violent protesters were targeting their black colleagues at the demonstrations.”
Ms Hall added: “Sadiq Khan must learn from last year’s protests. He cannot continue to pander to the protests and turn a blind eye to criminality.
“As we look to recruit more black and ethnic minority officers, the Mayor must keep them safe from these vile attacks. It’s vital the Mayor and the Metropolitan Police urgently review their measures to keep these officers safe.”
Andy George, president of the National Black Police Association, said: “These figures just reinforce how difficult the job can be for BAME officers in being the conduit between the police and the community.
“During the uplift programme we need to do everything we can to encourage and support black and minority ethnic officers to join and remain in policing.”
