Neighbours spoilers follow for UK viewers.

Neighbours businesswoman Terese Willis goes public with a heartfelt apology on UK screens next week after being called out for her past behaviour.

Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou) tries to make amends after being branded a hypocrite over her attitude towards Australia Day.

In upcoming scenes on Channel 5, Terese decides that Lassiters will not be hosting any Australia Day celebrations. This is in support of the ‘Change the Date’ movement, which calls for Australia Day to be held at a different time.

Terese is feeling positive about the decision, but she’s wrong-footed when Tim Collins (Ben Anderson) writes an article that reveals her past views on the debate.

In recent years, campaigners have called for Australia Day to no longer be celebrated on January 26. The current date marks the day that Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Sydney Cove in 1788 following the arrival of the First Fleet.

This began the colonisation of Australia and the oppression of Indigenous Australians.

Tim Collins’s article reveals that a campaign group lobbied Terese to cancel the hotel’s Australia Day celebrations in 2016, but she replied publicly with a firm refusal.

A sheepish Terese hopes she can ride out the controversy, pointing out that she no longer agrees with her past statement.

Later, Terese attends a meeting with local councillor Jacinta Hay (Maurial Spearim) on an unrelated matter.

Terese mentions Tim’s article, trying to brush it off as a spiteful move from her rival.

Jacinta challenges Terese on her dismissive attitude, pointing out that while she may have changed her mind since 2016, her comments would have still caused hurt at the time.

Terese soon realises that she needs to take action, so she records a public apology for her past comments.

Although the initial plan is for Terese to read from a script, she eventually ditches the pre-prepared speech and speaks from the heart instead.

As well as apologising, Terese promises to be a better ally in the future. Will she manage to make amends?

Neighbours wrote in this storyline to air on Australia Day last month, but the show’s UK broadcasts are currently four weeks behind.
